While making business plans and yearly projections, entrepreneurs should make sure that they take the time to properly insure their investment. If not, any profit they make could go toward taking care of damages and lawsuits.

Entrepreneurs who run their business from home will want to make sure that not only their home is covered, but the business they have inside of their home as well. A homeowner's policy doesn't cover every aspect of a home-run business. Filing a homeowner's claim for losses from a home business that your insurance agent isn't aware of may result in them either refusing to cover the losses or cancelling the policy. One solution is to have what's known as an add-on or rider to an existing homeowner's or renter's policy. This additional segment of the policy could provide a couple thousand dollars more coverage for a low annual premium. This type of policy could prove the most beneficial for entrepreneurs who don't have a lot of expensive equipment.

Business owners who have individuals working for them will want to make sure that those employees are covered with a workers' compensation policy. Employees who business owners consider independent contractors may be considered to be employees by the state they reside in. This could be an expensive mistake to make in the event that you are audited.

Entrepreneurs who rent an office space will want to consult their landlord or renting company to see what is covered in the rental agreement. If necessary, business property insurance could cover the building structure and whatever items are in the office.

Professional and general liability insurance covers entrepreneurs in the event that a customer or client attempts to sue them for negligence or bodily harm sustained while in an office. Product liability coverage is a good option for businesses that sell or make products. This kind of insurance will be useful in case a customer is injured by that product. Just as doctors and lawyers have malpractice insurance, entrepreneurs should make sure that they are equally insured as well.

Starting a personal business can be both an exciting and daunting task. While business insurance can seem to add to your initial headache, it can save you from an even bigger headache later on.
