Offices can be organized in two main ways - open and partitioned office plans. An open office means that all workers are in the same open space together. On the other hand, in a office partitioning system, workers are either given private rooms to work in or the room is subdivided to offer some kind privacy to each worker. Compared to open room, the partitioned system may seem expensive to set up, but does office partitioning improve productivity?

Subdividing an office allows workers to arrange their rooms the way they want. This means employees will be more comfortable as they can arrange their belongings amongst them in their own space. If your staff are happy, content and comfortable then they will be more likely to be more productive.

One argument is that having office partitioning limits communication amongst workers. This is not always the case as it has been noted that a lot of commumication that takles place in an open office has no benefit to the company. Conversations that are irrelevant to work occur which therefore wastes company time. Office partitioning ensures that only useful communication takes place hence productivity.

Workers can sometimes feel intimidated if they are being watched over in an open office. In a office partitioning system, every employee has privacy; consequently, they are free to experiment on their work without necessarily being questioned. This way, an employee only presents his or her best copy of work after proper experimentation. Open office plans can be the cause of disorganisation. One worker could be devising a strategy whilst another is making marketing calls. This can cause a disturbance for those who need calm and quiet to finish their work. Furthermore, since all office supplies are used communally, they are likely to be misused as no one is in charge. When an office partitioning system is put in place it becomes a lot easier to keep track of equipment as supplies can be allocated to each employee.

If there is a disease outbreak in an open office plan, it will easily spread to all employees. This is particularly prevalent with ailments such as colds and flu due to the fact they are airborne. Productivity levels will fall if your employees are ill. It is wise however, to consult an expert before you go dividing up your office space to make sure you get the most from it. Also consult your employees. A good idea is to find the best way to get the most out of both systems.
